Here’s an update on my progress in the Beach Spectres project. I’ve put out two update videos since the last post but failed to write a post here. I promise I’m trying my best to be more organised than usual!
Update 2: it’s all coming together!
I’ve spent some time in Inkscape and worked out that I can cut up the monotile into just a few, repeating pieces. I hope I can get the joins to be strong enough.
Update 3: I’ve made one!
I’ve 3D printed a whole Spectre at the size I want for the final cutter, and for Maths Week England I went into three primary schools and asking kids to stamp out some tessellations. I’m writing another post about that activity, in case it interests any primary maths people.
We have a website!

I’ve also spent some time putting together a website about the project. I’m much more comfortable doing a bit of web dev than making real things.
So beachspectres.com contains some information about the event (not too detailed at the moment), an explanation of the project that you can handwave your way through at the dinner table, and I’ll be posting the project updates there as well as here and on Mathstodon.
