Inaugural ICO Alan Turing lecture
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office, the “independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals”, is holding its first ICO Alan Turing Lecture at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester at 6pm on Tuesday 11 September.
According to the website, this lecture
will be delivered by distinguished Cambridge historian Professor Christopher Andrew, the official historian of MI5, who will be discussing the life and work of Turing.
If you would be interested in attending you are invited to send your expressions of interest to dpc@ico.gsi.gov.uk. While places are limited we will be doing our best to accommodate those wishing to attend.
The inclusion of “first” suggests this is part of a series but it isn’t clear what form this will take. The website says they “hope to arrange similar lectures in the future to highlight important issues connected to the ICO’s work”.

More maths at Hay Festival
After plugging Marcus du Sautoy’s appearances at Hay Festival, it occurred to me that it would only be fair to mention the other mathematically-interesting events of the week.
The Dramatic Life of Numbers: Marcus du Sautoy at Hay Festival
Marcus du Sautoy will be involved in three events at Hay Festival the weekend after next, including a talk titled Maths on Stage: The Dramatic Life of Numbers, about “his experiences working with theatre company Complicité on A Disappearing Number and his explorations of bringing maths to the stage in a recent collaboration with actress Victoria Gould.”
Marcus is also chairing a discussion of Islamic art and appearing on a panel discussing “the way we live now”.
Third IMA Virtual Branch talk: ‘Dissections – highlights from a masterclass’ by Bernard Murphy
The IMA has a series of online talks. The third in this series will be ‘Dissections – highlights from a masterclass’ by Bernard Murphy on Thursday 10th May 2012 starting at 7 pm. The following information is available on attending this:
This is to be the third IMA virtual branch talk and will take place in an online classroom.

IMA W. Mids 17 April: ‘Routing Military Convoys’ by Andy Verity-Harrison
On 17th April 2012 the West Midlands Branch of the IMA will hear ‘Routing Military Convoys’ by Andy Verity-Harrison. in Birmingham near New Street railway station. Non-members welcome, no charge is made. Abstract:
Current military operations emphasise the need for mobility more than ever. Thus, routing convoys so that they reach their correct destinations in the shortest time is important. However, the planning itself can be considerable and must be carried out quickly if operational tempo is to be maintained. With this in mind the military planning problem of simultaneously routing multiple convoys between multiple origin and destination locations was formulated as a combinatorial optimisation problem and used as a benchmark problem for investigating the applicability of a variety of optimisation methods to military decision making.
