Undergraduate conference: Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today 2013

Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today 2013 is the second undergraduate mathematics conference to be hosted by the University of Greenwich Department of Mathematical Sciences, with support from the IMA and GCHQ, on Saturday 16 February 2013. Undergraduate students are encouraged to submit an abstract by 1pm on Friday 14 December for a talk on a mathematical topic of their choice. As well as a day of engaging student talks, a keynote lecture will be given by Professor Robin Wilson on ‘Leonhard Euler: Life, Labours and Legacy’. The website promises that

those going into research will gain experience of the process of conference submission, while those going into the workplace will gain valuable experience of professional practice and networking to enhance their CVs and career prospects. Speakers will additionally gain evidence of their professional skills. All delegates will gain insights into a wide range of mathematics of potential value in their future careers. It should be a wonderfully enjoyable day of inspiring mathematics.

I was involved in organising the first Tomorrow’s Mathematicians Today conference in 2010 and at the time I wrote a piece for Mathematics Today explaining why I felt students should attend such an event, which you can read as ‘Improving graduate skills through an undergraduate conference‘.

Registrations have already been received from eleven UK universities.

IMA Early Career Mathematicians’ Conference Autumn 2012

I am to Chair the next Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Early Career Mathematicians’ Conference, on Saturday 24 November 2012 at the University of Greenwich. As this gets closer I am getting pretty excited to be running this and I am proud of what we have arranged. I have just posted the schedule for this over on the IMA blog. As I say over there:

I believe the Early Career conferences have a useful role to play. Many mathematicians find themselves as the only mathematician in their team, or at their company, and the chance to meet others in similar situations in a friendly, mathematically-themed environment can be very valuable. Another beneficiary can be students, by coming into contact with near-peers in employment (both speakers and other delegates). This might help them with a career choice or certainly can get them talking to others who have been through what they are about to go through – getting a job or further study.
The schedule of talks is given at the bottom of this blog post. You will see we start with a hands-on session of puzzles, games and recreational maths, to wake us up and get everyone talking. After lunch, we will hear from four interesting early career mathematicians talking about their work in some diverse areas of mathematics and its applications. Talks will not be maths-heavy (it is the weekend, after all!) and the conference is suitable for anyone with an interest in mathematics.

So please consider joining us for the conference (registration link below) and please help if you can by advertising the conference to students and early career mathematicians working in industry. The latter in particular are very hard to reach, so if you work with mathematicians in the first fifteen years of their career, please tell them about the conference. Thank you and I hope to see you in Greenwich!

IMA Mathematics 2013 Conference

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications’s flagship general mathematical interest conference, ‘Mathematics’, is getting ready for its eighth outing in 2013. Mathematics 2013 focuses on the Mathematics of Planet Earth, an international collaboration, including talks on climate, education, energy and demography. The website expresses a hope that

the audience will have mathematicians, those who work with mathematicians in policy forming roles, and anyone who has an interest in developments in the applications of mathematics.

The conference will take place on Thursday 14 March 2013 at Mary Ward House in London. A programme and registration for the conference are available via the website.

MAA MathFest Day 1

The Mathematical Association of America is throwing a big mathematical party at the moment in Madison, Wisconsin. It’s called MathFest 2012 and promises to be “informative, inspiring, and productive.”

Our intrepid schoolboy reporter Colm Mulcahy is in attendance, and will be sending in pictures and thoughts throughout the three days of the event.

MathsJam Annual Conference 2012 booking now open

Booking is now open for the 2012 MathsJam annual conference. As well as being a regular monthly event in pubs all over the UK and the world, MathsJam has an annual gathering on a weekend in November, where attendees enjoy lightning 5-minute talks, long coffee breaks and general mathematical hanging out – as well as MathsJam’s standard “puzzles, games, problems, and sharing fun stuff with like-minded self-confessed maths enthusiasts”.

This year, the conference will take place at Wychwood Park, near Crewe, on the weekend of 17th-18th November 2012. The Aperiodical editorial team will almost certainly be in attendance, so watch this space for details of the exciting things we have planned for the weekend.

Places cost £165 for one person or £250 for two people for the whole weekend, with discounts for the unemployed, the early, and those who don’t need a room at the conference park.

MAA MathFest 2012

MathFest, the annual summer meeting of the Mathematical Association of America which “offers a substantial mathematical program that promises to be informative, inspiring, and productive”, will take place from 2nd-4th August in Madison, Wisconsin. This promises

Educational Programs, Informative Sessions, Dynamic Exhibits, Memorable Collaborations, Engaging Meetings, Special Events and Activities, Plenty of Mathematics FUN, …and Much more!

The early-bird and regular registration periods have passed, but you can still register at the slightly-increased late rate, from \$60 for graduate/undergraduate students up to \$350 for members of the MAA.
