The Big Internet Math-Off 2019 Semi-final 1: Lucy Rycroft-Smith vs Sameer Shah

The group stage is over, and now we’re only three matches away from finding the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician (2019 edition, of the 16 people who were asked to take part and were available in July).

For the first semi-final, from group 1 it’s Lucy Rycroft-Smith up against the winner of group 2, Sameer Shah. The pitches are below, and at the end of this post there’s a poll where you can vote for your favourite bit of maths.

The Big Internet Math-Off 2019, Group 3 – Vicky Neale vs Sunil Singh

This is the nineteenth match in our group stage, but there’s been a change to the schedule: from Group 3, it would’ve been Vicky Neale against Sunil Singh. Unfortunately, some grade A eejits have made a situation where Sunil can’t concentrate on the competition any more, so he’s had to pull out.

Vicky had already written her pitch, and there’s no way we’d keep it from you, so we present it below. I’ve also added a bit of fun maths from my own collection to make up the slack. There’s no voting today, and it’ll count as a win for Vicky.
